Mid-century design bares it is roots in the time after WWII when new strategies of furniture design in Australia took off thanks to the availability of new resources, and sometimes shortages of others. It was a time when innovation was at the heart of every design, and formed its very own pared-back identity.

From the iconic curves of Grant Featherston’s plywood contour variety and Clement Meadmore’s welded steel corded chairs (an absolute favourite of ours!), its suffice to say that mid-century furnishings design and style successfully turned its back on the decorative design that was so frequent in the past.

The ‘Mid-Century Modern’ exhibition at the NGV showcases above 100 of the most iconic pieces from influential designers like, Douglas Snelling, Fred Lowen, Schulim Krimper, who are still as loved these days as they were way back then. The operate of such greats are nonetheless discovered in galleries and is sought following by collectors nowadays – testament to the lasting good quality and integrity of their operate.

‘Mid-Century Modern:Australian Furnishings Design and style’ is on at the National Gallery of Victoria’s Ian Potter Centre, at Federation Square, from 40th May until 19th October 2014.
